“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
Some say Edmund Burke (circa 1770), while others say John Stuart Mill (circa 1867) was the source of this quote. Even though both men said something similar, the actual quote is possibly a paraphrase, with a definitive source not yet identified.
I almost hate to admit this, but I did not register to vote in elections until I was 30 years old. In reality, I was doing nothing in regard to selecting someone to represent me either locally or federally. It seems like I was willing to let others pick our leaders, which now that I think about it, was me being apathetic in regard to the direction our country was headed.
I think what motivated me to register and vote was that I finally realized that things would not change unless I did my part. Doing absolutely nothing to choose our leaders and possibly better our country, was in fact what I was doing. My conclusion is that we all should do our part to keep our country focused on God, and voting in elections is one way for us to do just that. After all, God has blessed our country with freedoms that allow us to express our choice with whom our God fearing leaders should be.
Titus 3: 1 – 8 (NKJV)
1 Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. 3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.
You may disagree, but I think that voting in our country’s elections is a good work that we should be taking part in.
